ABOUT SERVICING YOUR PIANO

Your pianos "action" should be a smooth responsive silent mechanism. Pedals which control your sustain and softness must also be quiet, smooth and instantly responsive. Your pianos keys must be sensitive to touch and to your dynamics, instantly co-operative.

The Piano has well over 8000 parts, many move repeatedly and so require lubricant and occasional adjustments. It is VITALLY important to lubricate pianos every ten or so years. Sooner if played very often.Without proper lubrication the piano wears it self out quickly. When lubrication is neglected your piano presents you an unresponsive touch, even stiff or heavy and will also become rather noisy and your damping function will also become sluggish.

I do not use powder lubricants as they attract moisture and rust. The lubricant I use, is called "Protec" it is from the USA and is a type of polymer suspended in alcohol and is an excellent specialist piano lubricant. It has the unique ability to work it's way into felts bushings, climb wire and work it's way into active axles and leathers so to lubricate preserve and protect. It is $35 for 4fl oz. I use approx 4fl oz for the upright pianos, and a little more is used on larger uprights and grands.

Most upright pianos, $235 for full lubrication service of Action, Keys and Pedal trap. Most Grand Pianos, $260 for full lubrication service of Action Keys Lyre Grand dampers and Sostenuto.

There is too much to list but my general service includes cleaning the piano frame, tuning pins, bridges and string hitch pins and pedal trap. After the action is removed parts are cleaned and tightened. All flanges ( wooden hinges ) in the action ( there are hundreds)are lubricated. The damper spoons, pilots, sustain rail flanges and sustain lifter rods ( which may need re-bushing) action pillars and action rails aligned and tightened. All keys are removed and the bed is cleaned. Keys are lubricated front and centre and the lifting pilots and or felts to lift the action notes are done. Any worn out or missing punchings under the keys ( required for levelling the keys ) are replaced and the pedal trap is serviced. Pedal cushions are replaced and pedals polished then regulated for correct sustain and damping functions, even lid and fall rubbers are replaced.
