I  have a lifetime passion for the Piano. I studied piano under Mrs. Mabel Leech. Mabel had met and studied briefly under the great Franz List. He commenced studies in piano tuning, making and restoration in Australia at C.H. McFarland Pianos in Marrickville, later doing a short course at the Amsterdam Institute of Piano Making in Holland.

Working for musical instrument firms such as Wadsworth Stamford and importers, the great Nicholson's in George St, Sydney and was later owner of Alpine Acoustics, Katoomba, NSW. He was Curator of the Blue Mountains Stringed Instruments Museum for five years.

Strings play possibly the most critical part in the production of tone in the Piano.

Roslau, is the unsung hero of the piano. These strings used by Julius Feurich, Schumann, ,Bechstein, Bluthner, Bosendorfer, Steinway, August Forster , Wm Knabe, because of tone and longevity. Simply put, they maintain the best sound for the longest time. There is no comparable string.

Roslau strings maintain position as the superior German Piano string maker. The Roslau string tone is clear, stable and harmonically rich. Understanding of the materials and a century's experience in string making ensure superior tone and a longer tone life compared to a quickly deteriorating Asian-made piano string.

Many Asian manufacturers make their own actions ( often plastics ) and use locally made strings. It is interesting that Yamaha make great racing bikes but don't use Yamaha tyres on them.! They use a specialist German tyre. Many if not all of the Asian strings simply will not sound good after a time. Most of them sound wooden or dead by the time the warranty on the piano runs out.

In Moscow at the Gnessins College, Bechstein, August Forster and Bluthner are used. From 6AM to 10PM students practise Monday to Sunday and the pianos which are fitted with Renner Actions and Roslau Strings, are still in a great condition after 30 years use !

I prefer to stock pianos which use "Roslau" strings. All Feurich, Schumann, Wm Knabe come with superb fully imported German Roslau Strings.
